In August 2018 Marta arrived in Aarhus for her Erasmus adventure and met her new roommate, Jonas. We bonded suspiciously fast over way too many Harry Potter marathons and by September we were inseparable. What we both assumed would be a short-lived exchange fling… well, it clearly had other plans.
Then came years of long distance (yes, plural 😅)
Round 1: Denmark → Spain
Marta finished her degree, and we became pros at airport goodbyes.Round 2: Denmark → The Netherlands
Marta moved to Leiden for her master’s and we levelled up our long-distance skills.Round 3: London → Brussels
Jonas went on exchange in London, Marta moved to Brussels for work, and we were so sure we’d see each other every weekend thanks to the Eurostar… and then COVID said “nope.” Marta never made it to London that whole year :(Round 4: Denmark → Brussels
Jonas returned to Aarhus to finish his studies. Marta started wondering if we would ever stop travelling just to hug each other.Round 5: Brussels (finally!)
Jonas moved to Brussels for an internship and—after all those years—we could finally live together. No trains, no flights, just us.Round 6: Copenhagen
Marta got a job offer in Copenhagen and we packed up one last time (for now!).
After our first year in Denmark, we did a few small things…
Bought our first home, adopted a cat, and—oh yes—got pregnant with our beloved Benji 💛
In October, while celebrating our 6th anniversary (and Marta being very, very pregnant), Jonas finally asked the question she’d been waiting for. We then achieved the world record for “longest engagement ever”: 2 years!
And in April 2025, we became parents to the most wonderful tiny human we could ever imagine.
From the very beginning, we’ve shared a love for board games and drinks, especially our eternally competitive matches of Catan (where feelings are always hurt, but only temporarily).
Long distance taught us that our patience is endless, our love is stubborn, and our savings… well, they suffered—over €6000 went into plane tickets just to be together.
Living in Brussels revealed our foodie side: Marta can find the best restaurants with her magic “algorithm,” and Jonas cooks like a chef—ideally with kitchen gadgets that cost more than they should.
We still don’t speak each other’s languages fluently, but we’re learning now so Benji can understand both of us. Marta continues singing without knowing any lyrics, while Jonas is the undisputed karaoke champion of the family.
And above all, becoming parents (right after surviving a mortgage) has shown us that we are truly a team—one made to last. ❤️
